Dr.
Benson is a career-long Autism Spectrum Disorders Consultant. She
began teaching children with ASD in the Fall of 1977 at the Edmonton
School for Autistic Children. Glenis was immediately drawn to people
diagnosed with ASD. Her formal ASD education and research, combined
with her experience, represents her own PERSEVERATION with ASD.
Her
approach is eclectic. She relies on the tenets of Positive Behavioral
Supports (PBS) to guide toward respectful interventions; challenging
behaviors are communication albeit unconventional. Glenis believes
Temple Grandin, Ph.D. has informed her practice immensely,
specifically Dr. Grandin's book Thinking in Pictures.
Dr. Benson is committed to providing visual supports and to
acknowledging communicative impairments even where none seem apparent. She relies
heavily on the teachings of Attwood, Hodgdon, Myles, Twachtman-Cullen, and Quill
(in alphabetical order) and many, many more professionals. Her true teachers
have been the many people with ASD and their families that she has had the
pleasure of knowing and supporting.
Philosophically she is committed to inclusive environments
and supported employment; she feels strongly that we've come too far to
retreat, back into segregated environments.
